Universal Pre-K takes trip to House of Sports
Universal Prekindergarten students in the Mount Vernon City School District are currently learning about health and nutrition. To support the learning in this unit, pre-K students from across the district took a trip to House of Sports.
Three groups of pre-K students went on this trip: one on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, one on Thursday, January 19, and one on Friday, January 20. On this trip they learned about being healthy and the importance of exercise. House of Sports therapists and sports staff worked on gross motor skills and balance with a number of physical activities.
County Executive George Latimer, Mount Vernon High School alumnus, signed the "Truthful Disclosure" bill into effect at MVHS on Thursday, March 30, 2023.
Dr. Gayle White-Wallace, Director of Pre-K, Gifted and Talented and Special Projects, was awarded with an Outstanding Innovative Leader award at the Transforming Education through Leadership & Learning (TELL) Awards ceremony on March 23, 2023. Dr. White-Wallace received this award for her implementation of instructional technology in her programs and classrooms. The award show was hosted by the Lower Hudson Regional Information Center (LHIRIC).
Through funding made possible by the Mount Vernon Educational Foundation (MVEF), 25 students in the Afterschool Robotics Program at Benjamin Turner Middle School have built VEX robots and learned to program and code them to perform in weekly competitions with peers.
Edith Kaplan Scholarship Dinner Dance honorees have been announced for each building in the district. The Mount Vernon City School District PTA Council is hosting the Edith Kaplan Scholarship Dinner Dance on Friday, April 14, 2023.
Acting Superintendent Dr. K. Veronica Smith attended a Women’s History Month roundtable discussion hosted by State Senator Jamaal Bailey. The discussion was attended by a number of city officials, all women.
Lincoln School held a No Place for Hate activity, Pen Pal Meet and Greet, for all its students on Tuesday, March 14, 2023. Scholars from K-8 were paired up with each other, and older students were mostly paired with younger students.

She is visited by Noel Campbel, Director of CTE, and Dr. Pauline Pearce, Principal at MVHS, to discuss the CTE program. Then, Dr. Marie Gaboton-Swift, Acting Superintendent of Pupil Personnel Services, Dr. Gayle White Wallace, Director of Pre-K, and Dr. Marguerita Circello, Director of ENL and World Languages, to discuss registration.
Students in the Academy of Talent, Leadership, and Scholars program (ATLAS) in grades four through six participated in a 3D cityscapes course after school once a week from January 24, 2023, to March 21. Students created their own cities in the style of Charles Fazzino, an artist who is known for pop art.
